Futsal is a small-sided game played with a smaller (size 4) low bounce ball, on a basketball sized court without rebound walls or nets. It is a game which is fun and promotes creativity, speed, technique, teamwork and quick thinking.
Northern Football Federation now deliver futsal  for players starting from 7 years through to adult.  Programmes start at a centre near you in term one 2012.
To register for 2012 please contact Sarah Payne 021 795 045 / sarah.payne@nff.org.nz <mailto:sarah.payne@nff.org.nz>  or go to our website www.nff.org.nz <http://www.nff.org.nz>   for more information.

Congratulations to Seren Williams & Camryn Birley!!!

Sport-teamA great big congratulations to Seren Williams & Camryn Birley for their achievements in the Coast soccer tournament.

Below is the article that was in the Hibiscus Matters Paper this week.

Guts and determination is behind the recent victory of a Coast soccer team in a national tournament.

The Hibiscus Ice Angels took the title of 10th Grade Norwest National Girl’s champions – a feat that coach Grant Birley says meant playing their heart and soul out for the full three days of the tournament (October 14–16).

The tournament, played at Huapai Reserve, is in its second year, and last year the Ice Angels placed third.

Eight teams, the majority from Auckland and surrounding areas, took part in the championship, which is organised by Norwest Football Club.

The Ice Angels is made up of some of the top 10-year-old players from Hibiscus Coast Association Football Club. The team faced Three Kings in the final, after a semi-final match against Bay Olympic that coach Grant Birley described as requiring all the true grit that the team could muster.

The final was deadlocked at 0-0 at full time and stayed deadlocked for extra time too. Both teams scored their first five penalties, which meant they went into sudden death. It was only on Three Kings 12th penalty that Hibiscus goalkeeper, Camryn Birley, pulled off the first save of the shootout. She went on to save the next two penalties and although Hibiscus also missed their next two penalties, Kara Drinnan stepped up and scored the winning points.
It took a total of 28 nail-biting penalties for the winners to be decided.

As well as the winners’ trophy, team member Aneka Mittendorff was selected as the Player of the Final and Camryn Birley was awarded the Hibiscus team’s Player of the Tournament.

Grasshopper Tennis!!!

Do you know what Grasshopper Tennis is?
It’s a type of tennis with small nets, small courts, small balls, and small rackets, this year Gulf Harbour students get to learn all about it!
Grasshopper Tennis started on the 26th of September and each class will have four sessions over the next four school weeks.
In these sessions, the students will be focussing on ball skills, proper serves and correctly hitting the ball.
Grasshopper Tennis is a great opportunity for us to go outside, exercise and hone our tennis skills at the same time.
We are all looking forward to the next session.

North Harbour Sport Basketball Competition

On Thursday the 25th of August our Year 7 and 8 girls basketball team competed in the North Harbour Basketball competition.
The whole team worked extremely well together and this showed that they had improved in each and every game. By the 3rd game of the day our girls were rearing to go and worked much better as a team. They were able to get some good possession and managed to win the third game with great defensive work.
Even though they didn't come first place they still had an awesome time and never gave up.
It was a pleasure training the girls, they were a very dedicated bunch and always willing to
          learn new techniques.
As a Hibiscus Coast coach - I was impressed with the level of the girls skills and look forward
to helping your school in the future to ensure girls basketball continues to grow.
