Gulf Harbour School Pistol Shooting Team

Six Gulf Harbour School students participated in the recent pistol shooting championships for NZ Schools: Harvey Watts, Alex Wood, Sophie Doocey, Pilippa Gouws, and Amy Watson.  It is a schools competition run by Pistol NZ that takes place towards the end of September every year. It is the national championships for NZ schools and for the first time primary/intermediate students also participated in what was until now a competition for secondary school students only. The Gulf Harbour students competed in the intermediate category with some of them achieving at a high level, taking into account that they only started with the sport earlier this year.  All six students train on a weekly basis under the guidance of Greg Yelavich. Greg is a world class athlete (competed at Two Olympic Games and won 14 Commonwealth medals) and is currently coaching the NZ Pistol Team and athletes participating at Commonwealth and Olympic level. It is a privilege for these young students to have Greg coaching on a weekly basis at our club.  He is currently preparing Joe Baily, a Whangaparaoa College student for participation at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in 2013 and is already looking for talent for the Youth Olympic Games in 2014. The shooting club works closely with Sport Gulf Harbour and we plan to soon have a few athletes (boys and girls) competing under the Sport Gulf Harbour banner. Parents (mum or dad) are encouraged to train and shoot together with their children. Training sessions are at the Wentworth College gym on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The club have an indoor electronic shooting range and state of the art Morini pistols for the use of beginners. Athletes use an air pistol and compete in the ISSF 10m air pistol event – which means they aim at a ‘standard size’ target at a distance of 10 meters.

Year 5 Win Hibiscus Coast School Netball Tournament

On Tuesday 30th July, a group of us Year 5 students  - Lily, Jessica, Charlotte, Josie, Amy, Annalia, and Mishke, plus us two (Chandler and Sacha) set off to the Hibiscus Coast Primary School Netball Tournament full of excitement and nerves down at Edith Hopper Courts in Manly!

We played four games, versing Whangaparaoa, in which we won 6-1. Then Warkworth was our next game, we had warmed up a little by then and were ready to do even better, which we won 9-1. After the first two games were played we were super happy and pretty confident. Next up was Red Beach, again we won 1-3. Then Kingsway which was the decider to see if we were to go through to the finals in which we won 12-1.

The excitement and nerves were at a all time high, as we were really needing to prove ourselves as a team and hopefully come away with a win!
When we got on court we played hard out, and with the most determination of the whole day as all we could think about was the trophy that we could possibly win.

It felt like we had only been on court a few minutes and then the final whistle blew. We had won 8-4. Wow! We felt so awesome and knew that everyone who was watching us was really proud of us and or efforts.

We then collected out trophies individually and as a team and headed back to school to share our great news with everyone!

We had such a fun day and can't wait for next years tournament!

Hockey Tournament At G.H.S

Throughout  term 2, some year 5, 6, 7 and 8 students trailed for a hockey team representing Gulf Harbour School.

On Thursday the 14th of June the year 5 and 6 went to Went Worth for their Hockey tournament. While the year 7 and 8 team played their tournament on our own Astro-Turf at GHS. The year five, and sixes had roughly 18 people which made two team’s, one team came 2nd and the other came 6th. They had about eight other teams join them, Silverdale, Stanmore Bay, Wentworth, Wainui, Red beach, Warkworth, Whangaparaoa and Orewa. The year 7 and 8 students only had four teams compete against.

One of the Year 6s was quoted saying the 'best part was coming in the top three teams'. The year seven and eight’s came third tying with Silverdale (team 2). The seven and eights versed 2 Silverdale teams, Stella Maris and Wainui. We had a great day!

GHS Sports Academy

Sports Academy is a program thats supports all different types of sports, e.g netball, basketball, softball and so many more. Sports academy not only helps students to develop their skills but also help focus on their daily responsibilities. This is all leading up to a big sports camp in end of this year 2012. We have had an awesome time so far in and it’s only term 2! It has been amazing! Sports Academy has been a high light for all the students involved. It’s fun, encouraging and challenging.

The academy gets together every Wednesday and works together as a team. They work their way through activities that Mrs. Taylor (Sports Academy teacher) has set up for us. Recently, We have been organising a Three day tournament inspired by the Olympics based in London including main sports like netball, cricket, basketball e.t.c. We have sent out invitations to schools and the finals will be held at the Wentworth College sports arena. Mrs.

Taylor invited a nutritionist to come in and explain what is the best food to keep your body strong, healthy and prepared for sport! We are all looking forward to the activities that are going to take place next term. We would like to say a BIG thank you to Mrs. Taylor for all the time and hard work that she puts into this program.
